Chili Momo

Chili momo, also known as C momo, is a popular Nepali dish that holds a special place in my heart. It’s a spicy twist on the classic steamed Momo that I adore.

Whether it’s steamed, fried, or sadeko, I can’t get enough of Momo in any form.

However, there are times when you crave spicy food, and that’s when chili momo comes to the rescue. It’s my personal favorite and a popular choice in Nepal.

The good part is that preparing chili momo is simple and only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Here is my simple and easy recipe for chili momo if you want to switch things up from the usual steamed version.

Ingredients

INGREDIENTS - momo chili recipe

Momo: This recipe requires pre-cooked momo. I usually use leftover or frozen momo, but you can use any vegetable or meat-based Momo (chicken or pork).

Here is a recipe for chicken momo and soy chunks recipe.

INGREDIENTS -MOMO (1)

Seasoning: Dark soy sauce, tomato ketchup, black pepper, salt, and spicy sauce(optional).

Spices: Red chili powder

Herbs: Spring onion or cilantro for garnishing.

Oil: Olive oil or any cooking oil.

Vegetables: Onion, bell pepper, and green chili. I am using a combination of red and green bell peppers, but feel free to use both or either. Chop the bell pepper and onion into medium size.

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Once hot, add pre-cooked momos. Fry until lightly browned, then remove from pan and set aside.
ADD MOMO (1)

  • In the same pan, add more oil.
  • Sauté chopped green chilies for a minute.
  • Then add onions and sauté for another minute.
  • Add bell peppers and combine well. Saute for a few minutes. Next, add ginger and garlic paste along with red chili powder.
  • Mix thoroughly and cook for a few minutes.
  • Next, add all the sauce (soy sauce, tomato ketchup, and spicy sauce) and black pepper to the pan.

Note: Soy sauce already has salt, so be careful when adding more salt.

  • Combine everything well, then add water. Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens further.
  • Once the sauce thickens, add the fried momos and combine with the sauce. Let it cook for the next few minutes until momo is coated with the sauce.
  • Once cooked, garnish it with a spring onion or cilantro.
  • Season with salt if needed, and serve the Momo hot.

Notes

#. Feel free to customize the level of spiciness by adjusting the quantity of green chilies. I enjoy spicy food, so I’m adding three Thai green chilies, but feel free to adjust it.
#. Soy sauce already has salt, so be careful when adding more salt.
