Here is a simple and easy recipe for canned sardines patties.

Ingredients

Sardines: Canned sardines. For this recipe, you can use either sardines in water or oil. Both options will work just fine. In this recipe, I am using sardines in water.
Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, Kashmiri powder or paprika powder, salt and pepper.
Coating: Plain flour and egg.
Oil: Olive oil or any vegetable oil of your choice.
Instructions

- Drain the oil or water from canned Sardines. Transfer it to the bowl.

- Add spices, seasoning (onion powder, garlic powder, red chili kashmiri powder, and cilantro), flour, and egg to the bowl. Next, combine everything well.

- Use your hands to make small, flat patties.
- Add oil to the pan.
- Once the oil is hot, add the sardines one at a time and fry them for 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Once the patties are cooked, place them on a kitchen towel to absorb excess oil. Serve the patties warm. Enjoy!

Serving & Tips
Serving Suggestions
- Rice/Roti: I love to pair it with rice or with roti.
- Bread: You can also pair sardine patties with bread, making a delicious and satisfying sandwich. To make the sandwich even more flavorful, add lettuce, tomato, and onion.
- Salad: Sardine fried can also be paired with a green salad, potato salad, or spicy cucumber salad.
Tips
- Add red or green chilies to the patties mixture to add spice.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of flour if the patties become runny.
Substitute
- You can substitute paprika powder for Kashmiri powder.
- If you prefer a healthier cooking method, you can grill or air-fry the patties instead of frying them in oil.
- You can use whole wheat flour or breadcrumbs instead of regular flour.
FAQ
1. Should you rinse canned sardines before using them in patties?
It is not necessary to rinse canned sardines before frying, but it’s a matter of personal preference.
Canned sardines are typically cooked and preserved in oil or sauce, and rinsing them can remove some of the flavor and nutrients. However, some people prefer to rinse the sardines to reduce the saltiness or to remove any unwanted flavors from the canning liquid.
